Ballet is more than just dance; it’s a journey of dedication, dreams, and countless memories. For one of our own aspiring professional ballerinas at San Jose Dance Theatre, this journey began at the age of five, alongside her two sisters, with all three enrolled in ballet classes. Being part of a trio has its unique bonds, but by age seven, she found herself especially captivated by the art form, sparking a passion that has only grown with time.
Finding Inspiration and a Supportive Community
San Jose Dance Theatre has played a huge role in her growth as both a dancer and an artist. Our supportive, close-knit community of teachers and dancers has been vital to her development. She reflects on the impact of teachers who shared their experiences and stories, providing her with both artistic insight and technical guidance that continue to inspire her every day.
Embracing the Magic of The Nutcracker
For many dancers, The Nutcracker holds a special place in their hearts, and this young ballerina is no exception. Each year, her connection to the production deepens as she experiences the timeless magic alongside fellow dancers, teachers, and the community. This year, she’ll take on three roles: Dew Drop Fairy, Spanish/Chocolate, and Snowflake. Her excitement to perform the Dew Drop Fairy role, a longtime dream, is palpable, and she eagerly anticipates dancing with the Flower corps in this cherished role. One unforgettable memory from last year’s Nutcracker was watching the Sugar Plum Pas De Deux from the wings each night. The beauty, emotion, and magic of the performance moved her to tears and ignited a desire to pursue ballet as a career. This year, she hopes to contribute her own touch of magic to the production, hoping to inspire others just as she was inspired.
Overcoming Challenges and Staying Motivated
Ballet is demanding both mentally and physically, and like many dancers, she has faced moments of self-doubt about her technique and appearance. Yet, focusing on her love for ballet and her personal goals has helped her overcome these insecurities. She has learned to use self-improvement as motivation rather than a source of negativity, striving to be better with each class.
Dreams for the Future
While her path may still be unfolding, she holds a deep desire to dance professionally, particularly with the San Francisco Ballet, ever since she attended their summer intensive and fell in love with the city and its artistic vibe. Balancing rigorous ballet training with high school studies and a social life is challenging, but she thrives on the busy schedule. Though she sometimes misses out on social events, she finds comfort in the company of her two sisters, her biggest supporters.
Lessons in Dedication
The most valuable lesson she has learned at San Jose Dance Theatre is dedication. With hard work, discipline, and resilience, she has come to realize that success in ballet—like life—requires patience and persistence. She believes these lessons will stay with her as she moves forward in her dance career.
Looking Ahead to This Year’s Nutcracker
As the Nutcracker season approaches, she eagerly looks forward to performing on stage, sharing special backstage moments with friends, and seeing the joy on the faces of her family and audience members.
Advice for Younger Dancers
For younger dancers dreaming of following in her footsteps, she shares this wisdom: “Ballet class is what you make of it. Bring your best, be willing to learn, and embrace each correction. Take care of yourself, mentally and physically, and remember why you started dancing in the first place.”
Her journey reminds us that ballet is about more than perfecting technique; it’s about finding joy, connection, and a sense of purpose in every step.
